The Mercy of God
God is a God of mercy. Mercy is compassion and kindness shown to an offender or an enemy. As a God of mercy, God loves the world and shows His temporal mercy everyday to sinners who despise His authority and refuse to surrender to His word – the Bible.
Matthew 5:44-45 “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
Yet even though God is merciful to sinners, God is not obligated to be merciful.
Romans 9:15 “For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.’”
Although He is not obligated to show mercy, by mercy He does spiritually cleanse and renew those who by faith alone confess their sins and turn to Him in humility.
Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit”
The mercy of God provides salvation to anyone who believes in Jesus. On the cross, the wrath of God fell on Jesus instead of sinners, so that when sinners believe in Jesus they might receive Jesus' righteousness by faith alone. Sinners receiving God’s forgiveness and mercy by faith, this is the mercy of salvation.
Isaiah 53:5-6 “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.”
Dear Reader, God wants to show you mercy because of your sins. Do you want His mercy? God is willing to give you mercy, if you put your faith in His Son.
Acts 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved”
